Walking across the National Mall, I tore open a packet of wildflower seeds — sky lupine, mountain phlox, coreopsis — and scattered its contents across the grass. As I later learned, to little surprise, the seeds did not survive the regular visits of a John Deere lawn mower and applications of herbicide. My purpose was pure protest, a symbolic objection to the bland, Kermit-colored expanse that dominates the epicenter of our nation’s capital. Across the country, the millions of small, suburban versions of the Mall directly contribute to that corrosion. Conceived by Washington’s master planner, Pierre Charles L’Enfant, in 1791, the National Mall was supposed to be “a grand, tree-lined avenue, flanked by embassies and gardens,” as The Washington Post put it in its superb history of the Mall.

Want to work in tech? Don't work in tech.

I advise young engineers today to work for Fortune 500 companies, not Big Tech. Today, however, he's working on a project for a different kind of tech company: John Deere. There is no magic at Big Tech companies, there's only money. And Fortune 500 companies simply don't have the luxury of buying talent just to park it. Today, all companies are tech companies, and they all want to see more recurring revenue in their business models, which means they need smart, restless engineers.

The UAW is negotiating new four-year contracts with Ford, GM, and Stellantis. UAW President Shawn Fain isn't ruling out a strike, potentially at more than one company. The automotive industry's labor union, the United Auto Workers, is gearing up for a fight with Detroit's Big Three car companies this summer and fall. Fain has said he is not ruling out a strike in this round of talks, potentially at more than one company. The average labor costs for the Detroit Three heading into contract talks four years ago hovered between $55 and $60 per hour.

The FedEx pilots who belong to the Air Line Pilots Association voted 57% against the proposed contract, which was reached in May and endorsed by union leadership. But even with the “no” vote, the 5,200 FedEx pilots won’t be able to go on strike any time soon. FedEx pilots are covered by the Railway Labor Act, which despite the name, covers both rail workers and airline employees. The FedEx pilots, who unlike most FedEx employees count as airline employees when it comes to which labor law they work under, have not cleared any of those hurdles so far. There have been numerous examples in recent years of union rank-and-file voting no on deals that were recommended by union leadership.

Agriculture and the overall food ecosystem are responsible for roughly one third of global greenhouse gas emissions. Growing all the things we eat at the increasing volumes we need depletes the soil of nutrients and produces harmful carbon emissions. Regenerative agriculture aims to reduce emissions and protect soil through various methods. "Is it good for the environment, good for the water, good for soil health? Three months on, the popularity of Clark – who will be eligible for the WNBA Draft in 2024 – shows no sign of waning. ‘Asteroid City’ Review: Our Town and Country
  + stars: | 2023-06-15 | by ( Manohla Dargis | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
“Asteroid City,” the latest from Wes Anderson, is filled with the assiduous visuals, mythic faces and charming curiosities that you expect from this singular filmmaker. It’s partly set in 1955 in a fictional Southwest town, a lonely four corners with a diner, gas station and motor inn. Palm trees and cactuses stipple the town, and reddish buttes rise in the distance. It opens in black-and-white on an unnamed television host (Bryan Cranston, severe and mustachioed) in a studio. It looks like a film, a meticulous, detailed, visually balanced wide-screen Wes Anderson one.

Now they were downriver in Council Bluffs, a city of about 60,000, and had two more events ahead before flying to New Hampshire and South Carolina for the remainder of a three-state, 12-city tour. Antia shared 3 major themes to invest in — and 14 key players driving this evolution. And according to Antia, right now there's no secular trend more exciting than the transformation of the world's food system. On the food supply side, Antia listed climate change and technological innovation as two additional drivers for the evolution of the global food system. This two-way impact between food production and the environment has revealed the necessity for greater sustainability in the world's food system, Antia explained. As global demand for local products increases, so does the demand for refrigerated frozen storage facilities and transportation.
But the farm equipment maker has been planting the seeds for an increasingly high-tech and autonomous future – one that critically hinges on space. But connectivity is the linchpin of this vision, and space fills a void left by fiber and traditional cellular signals. "We think satellite communications is a really intriguing, interesting technology to pursue to sort of solve that communications gap." Last fall the company put out a request for proposal to the satellite communications industry to partner on space-based connectivity services. "We had this opportunity to bring two industries together — satellite space communications and agriculture — and say, 'What kind of value could we create?'"

"You're going to see a lot more aggressive UAW," Fain told reporters late Monday after a day-long meeting with local union officials. Those contracts could be models for the UAW's goals in talks with the Detroit automakers beginning this summer, analysts said. The Detroit automakers have reported robust profits during the past four years from their North American operations, mainly thanks to the pickup trucks and SUVs that UAW members assemble. Securing UAW jobs as the Detroit automakers shift toward electric vehicles is a "top priority," Fain said. The UAW and Detroit automakers will begin bargaining toward new contracts this summer.

March 8 (Reuters) - Russia-based private equity firm Insight Investment Group has acquired the Russian leasing arm of farm equipment maker Deere & Co (DE.N), a state register of corporate entities showed. "Our goal is to build a leasing holding which will unite leasing companies with different areas of expertise," Insight Group said. "Following this strategy, we have acquired John Deere Financial and do not exclude making other deals in this market."
